A resolution for the New Year

I am a creature of habit. I always have been. Every morning, I eat two Eggo waffles and start in on my first bottle of Vintage Seltzer for the day. In the middle of the week, I roast a chicken because I can’t find it in me to try to cook anything new. Every Sunday, I trek to the Ritz diner on 62nd and 1st Ave to have brunch with my brother and then I stop by the terribly sad pet shop on Lexington Ave to visit the $1800 dachshund puppies I cannot afford. When pressed for time, I resort to fallback settings: narrow black pants and a large black sweater to wear to the office, a bottle of Sancerre to accompany my reruns of Law and Order Special Victims Unit, listening to Bob Dylan’s Hurricane on my way to the 4 train, always walking the same path to the train, and always wearing the exact same gold bracelet. When I find a routine that works, I can’t help but notice that risk and novelty often fall a distant second to the pressures of a busy schedule and the need for efficiency.
Although I have never been a supporter of New Year’s resolutions, in 2010 I’m trying something new. This is the year that the New Year coincides with my decision to try to break my routine, and I’m even starting early. This morning, I began my day with yogurt and granola. To really spice up my wardrobe choice, I wore the normal narrow black pants but paired them with a large white sweater. For dinner this Wednesday evening, my roommate and I will prepare fajitas with chicken and steak and gobs of perfectly limey guacamole. I’m also bringing home a special treat from the office—a bottle of Murgo Brut Rose 2006 from Sicily, an unexpected and fun pairing to our summery meal served up in mid-winter.
I know that the change to my routine will be as invigorating as the Murgo itself, and I look forward to a brand new year of surprising my palate, my life, my friends and myself.
