Garrett_8.6.14_72dpiIt’s hard to believe that an estate that has been a prominent figure in Burgundy since 1880 can be considered “overlooked,” but that’s what we at IWM consider Simon Bize to be. This estate has managed to fly under the radar so that only true Burgundy lovers know the joy that awaits them when they seek out these bottles. For three generations, this winery was run by three different men named Simon Bize, until the pattern was broken when Patrick Bize took the reins in 1972. In the 40 years that followed, Patrick crafted some of the finest wines made in the appellations they produced. Sadly, he passed away far too soon in late 2013, and these 2011 bottlings are among the last vintages he worked on and quite possibly one of the last chances you will have to experience his mastery.

Simon Bize 2011 Savigny Les Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Vergelesses $77.99

Located just northwest of the village of Beaune, Savigny holds some of the regions’ best-kept secrets. Vergelesses is one of the finest 1er crus in the region, and Bize arguably makes the finest expression. The wine is cool and graceful, highlighted by seductive red fruit. This bottle is very close to its drinking window and it will give you a decade of pleasure. Drink 2016 to 2026

Simon Bize 2011 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru $275.00

Most of the Bize holdings are located in Savigny or at least within Beaune. This is the one parcel they own “north of the border” in the Côte de Nuits and, boy, is it a fine one to own. The vineyards of Latricières-Chambertin produce wines of power that stack layers and layers of flavor and character upon one another. In the hands of Bize, this power harmonizes with detail and elegance, and this is a bottle to be cherished for many years to come. Drink 2018 to 2030.
