Crystal 2014I grew up in Montana, and my family often took road trips to surrounding states—Idaho, Washington and Oregon—so I have fond memories of the beautiful scenery, lush forests and the smell of fresh mountain air. Now that I am a bit older, I add one more memory to the list: wine. All of these states make impressive wines that can easily compete on the national and global stage. I have recently found myself dipping into the Willamette Valley’s elegant and south soothing Pinots to quench my thirst. Today I highlight a few favorites from the Soter family.

Soter Vineyards is owned and run by Tony Soter, who is also linked to the Etude “Pinot” estate in California and dabbles in Bordeaux varietals around the Napa Valley. After leaving California to focus on two grapes (mostly Pinot Noir with a splash of Chardonnay), the Soter family purchased their Oregon property in 1997. Their small California plot is located in the southern area near Napa Valley, the Soter’s former home. Here, the wines benefit from the cooling breezes drawn in through the Golden Gate as well as from the well-drained, gravelly loams. The resulting wines have vibrancy and aromatic focus, offering beautiful balance and character. Regardless of where the wine is made, the Soter collection of wines makes great pairings with a variety of farmer’s market favorites this season.

Soter 2014 North Valley Highland Rosé $26.99

Although summer has passed, Rosé drinking certainly should not! Rather than reaching for a white to start the meal, I reach for this beautiful Pinot Rose that bursts with tart berries, hints of brioche and vanilla. Outstanding match with anything from antipasti to pasta and lean red meats, this wine is also a tremendous value at its price point.

Soter NV Proprietary Red $148.00

An equal blend 40% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with 20% Malbec, the grapes for this blend come from the Soter family’s small “Little Creek Vineyard.” This red offers impressive red and black fruit character with immense depth that lingers for hours while gracing you with its velvety texture; it’s a gorgeous red that will impress at any dinner table!
